Lanchester Parish Council is consulted by Derwentside District Council on planning applications affecting the parish. The Parish Council is not the planning authority and does not make the final decision on planning applications.

The Parish Council operates a Planning Committee which considers planning applications and makes recommendations. These are based on planning policies and the Village Design Statement.
