Get Involved
The Lanchester Locality Map project ran several projects over its lifetime and there were many, varied opportunities for people to get involved. Some of the opportunities offered by the project are listed below:
Lanchester Garden Pond Survey
Ponds are a valuable home for all sorts of wildlife including very rare animals such as the great crested newt. As part of the Wildlife Audit of the Parish we asked people to send in details of their garden ponds. This information can be very valuable and can help to plan where new ponds should be created to help our wildlife thrive in the countryside.
The Lanchester Valley Conservation Volunteers
A monthly volunteer team got together to make a positive difference to the wildlife and habitats across the parish. Activities included:
Saturday 21st January 2012
We joined Durham Wildlife Trust at Malton Nature Reserve to undertake some woodland management.
Saturday 22nd October 2011
We worked alongside Durham Wildlife Trust Volunteers undertaking woodland management at Ragpath Heath.
Sunday 11th September 2011
We helped the County Council Ranger, Karen Fisher, to manage the grassland at Hurbuck triangle a Local Wildlife Site located within the Parish.
Saturday 26th March
We joined the Lanchester Partnership for their Annual Spring Clean of the village.

The Wildlife Audit
The Wildlife audit was compiled and written by local volunteers with extensive knowledge of the local wildlife. Local photographers also donated their photographs for this fabulous document.
The Heritage Audit
Volunteers also helped with the heritage audit, by attending meetings to develop the walks and as route surveyors.
